How now! What news from the Diaspora?

Sub-Saharan countries of Africa have a substantial number of their citizens working in the diaspora, constituting a community that can revolutionise energy availability in these countries.

The region, which includes all SADC countries, received roughly US $54 billion in remittances in 2023, a slight decline of 0.3% from 2022 (allafrica.com)

At the same time, approximately 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity, predominantly in rural areas. This energy deficit hampers socio-economic development, limiting educational and healthcare services, reducing agricultural productivity, and restricting income-generating opportunities. The World Bank estimates that achieving universal electricity access by 2030 would require annual investments of US$49 billion. (IEA)
